Holden Fourth Graders Go Geocaching on the Kent State Campus
To support the students’ inquiry regarding maps and their development of knowledge and skills for map navigation, the Holden fourth graders went geocaching this afternoon on the Kent State campus.Geocaching is an outdoor location-based treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.This afternoon in the AT&T Classroom the fourth graders learned how to navigate GPS coordinates in a digital map and then ventured out on campus using the Geocaching iphone app to guide them to the targeted locations. In addition to building knowledge and expertise with maps, geocaching is an excellent way to engage children outdoors while also promoting critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration.
